Google Nexus 5 'official' Play Store listing reveals price tag

Google Nexus 5 'official' Play Store listing reveals price tag

nexus5-playstore-image.jpg

Google's much awaited next-generation Nexus phone, the Nexus 5 has already made an online appearance.

Interestingly, the leak comes from not any other source but Google, as the phone was accidentally listed on the Play Store, the company's content, services and device marketplace. The listing appeared for select users and was pulled by Google after it realised it's made a faux pas.

The listing even revealed the pricing of the Nexus 5's 16GB model, which was listed at $349. The listing showcases the phone in its full glory offering a nice look at the phone's rear, front and left edge. The pictured device's form factor is in line with previous leaks with the back sporting the Nexus and LG branding and the display running a version of Android that matches the leaked Android 4.4 KitKat screenshots complete with the transparent navigation key bar and new icons.

nexus5-playstore-listing-leak.jpgConfirming some more rumours, the Home screen of the phone doesn't feature an icon for Messaging, which appears to have been replaced by the Hangouts app, as suggested by the presence of its icon.

The link that should have fetched details related to the features and specifications of the device was not working, so we'll probably have to wait for these details till Google announces the phone.

A recent report had suggested that the Nexus 5 might be priced at $399 for the 16GB model, while the 32GB model would come at $499, but that looks to have been proven wrong with this accidental listing.

Last week, another report claimed that Google might release Android 4.4, the latest iteration of its mobile and tablet operating system, on October 28. So it's likely that the company  will also announce the Nexus 5 at the same event.

Earlier this week, the Nexus 5 was pictured in new leaked images that revealed rear and side panels.

Rumoured specifications of the Nexus 5 include a 4.95-inch full-HD (1080p) IPS LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The alleged Nexus 4 successor has also been expected to include a host of sensors like ambient light, proximity, pressure as well as accelerometer, compass, notification LED and gyroscope.

Google ‘leaks’ Nexus 5 pricing, details
Google accidentally leaks the pricing and details of its upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone on Play Store.

NEW DELHI: Google's upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone has been in the news for quite some time, with reports of its pricing and specs leaking frequently. Now it seems Google has accidentally confirmed the pricing and some details of the device on its Play Store.

The upcoming Nexus smartphone was briefly listed on Google Play Store, alongside the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices. The listing showed that the 16GB version of the handset will be priced at $349. The currently available Nexus 4 also cost $349 for the 16GB variant at the time of launch. Its 8GB and 32GB versions were priced at $299 and $399, respectively.

In line with earlier reports about the device, the images showed the new user interface (UI) of the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat, as well a few apps on the home screen.

Nexus 5 has also been leaked by Canadian website Mobile Syrup, which published press images of the device. The photos show that Canadian telecom operator Telus will carry the upcoming device.

Google is likely to launch Nexus 5 on October 28, along with the next Android OS version called KitKat. Codenamed Hammerhead, this smartphone is said to run on Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 800 chipset, which is the most powerful in the world right now. The quad-core application processor will be clocked at 2.3GHz and will be complemented by Adreno 330 graphics processor. Its display will have 1920x1080p resolution, with on-screen resolution being 1794x1080p.

It is said that the next Nexus smartphone will be manufactured by LG, which makes the current model. Nexus 5 is said to be based on the recently unveiled LG G2 smartphone and it is expected that the device will feature a 5-inch display, 2GB RAM and 13MP rear camera.

There are also speculations that Google will also unveil Nexus 10 tablet alongside Nexus 5 and Android KitKat. This tablet is rumoured to be manufactured by Asus this year, instead of Samsung which made last year's model, and have a full HD screen.

“Innovations in present methods can make students industry-ready”

Interview of the Day: “Innovations in present methods can make students industry-ready”

Interview of the Day: “Innovations in present methods can make students industry-ready” Dr. K. Mallikharjuna Babu, PhD, Principal of BMS College of engineering
Kanchana Dwarakanath, TimesJobs.com Bureau
There is a skill gap between corporate requirements and what the student learns. What are the key concerns you have as an educationist?
I as an educationist agree that there is a skill gap and that is primarily because we still follow a traditional education system. Students/fresh graduates are not able to perform/adapt to the techniques and work structure ones they get a job because they lack hands-on-experience. They manage to survive only with book knowledge that has been imparted to them during their academia.
To eradicate this we need to improve our teaching techniques with innovative approaches. One of the ways is to conduct continuous workshops and seminars on subject/segment specific industry, which allows each student to participate and experience the trends in the current market. Also, encouraging regular internship programmes along with apprenticeship programs during the course of the semesters, as part of the curriculum. This helps in bridging the gap between corporate requirements and what the students learn.
Do you agree that there is a skill shortage in the industry? What do you think is the reason behind the same?
The world today is on a high-speed track. Every approach, be it science, technology or Pharma is developing very fast. Something which was invented a few months earlier is  considered old after  a couple of months.  With this continuous improvement across all industries, there’s a constant need and pressure to learn and keep yourself updated. Hence, there is a required skill shortage.
The problem is, India is a vast and developing country, and there is societal pressure and competition among students to constantly perform well. This applies mostly to theoretical performance, which results in students having only bookish knowledge rather than being street and industry smart. This is evident when students from other countries are able to understand technology, and are more practical in approach than their Indian counterparts. Even with existing infrastructure and access, full use is not made at colleges.
This is a key problem.  Even with the existing infrastructure and syllabi many things can be achieved. Our education system coupled with the environment of parent-societal pressure does not allow the use of the required facilities and the bandwidth to accommodate many advanced techniques.  For example: use of cloud computing is still not a part of the curriculum while this is widely used in advanced education systems abroad.
There is a growing trend of corporate-academia cooperation to make education requirement-specific. What do you think both parties should do to address the skill-gap requirement?
We need to take this further to have a greater impact. I suggest that a consortium of the industry and institutions must be formed to address this issue. Some leading institutions may be given an opportunity to train the students in that area. These skill centers need to be established by the Industry and Institutes together. The training must be made on current as well as future requirements of technology and at the same time made affordable to the students.
For example: We at BMS Engineering College constantly conduct workshops and seminars for students; recently The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering along with the placement centre of BMSCE organized ‘Bosch Day’ at the BMS College in association with Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI). The aim of this program was to provide students with knowledge on the functional expertise of Bosch in the building of electronic control units (ECUs) for automotives.
We have also incorporated a new approach to admitting students into the institution, we conduct an induction programme on various segments/field before they join. Through this induction programme students are able to gauge in which segment/field  their interest lies in and opt for that as their course.
There are skill development organisations and foundations. Do you think what they teach are relevant? What would you suggest, if not, as an alternative?
There are skill development centers/organisations across the country but their reach is limited. Only a few get in there and students have to pay huge amounts to train themselves. All students can’t afford this and there is no guarantee what they learn at some of these institutions would be relevant once they pass out. There is no mechanism to verify this. In order to counter this, the training must be provided in-house, with sufficient collaborative supervision.

Don't eat anything when really hungry

Don't eat anything when really hungry

Don't eat anything when really hungry
Watch what you eat when really hungry

It's in our basic nature to reach for a large portion when hungry. Therefore, workouts apart, it's a must to keep high-satiety food options available at hand, simply for the times when you feel those hunger pangs.
With all the energy you devote to shedding kilos, you might actually know very little about the why most diets fail — hunger pangs. It's never easy to resist that third serving of pizza even if you are bursting out of your seams. The guilt always strikes after the damage is done. Know the signs of hunger, the cues for stress eating, and what triggers your cravings to tame yourself when hunger strikes.
The culprit
You've been working since 10 in the morning and consistently thinking about the deadline. Too busy to eat, there is a chance you would suffer from starvation. "Hunger is your body's cue to eat. Due to habits such as erratic timings and long gaps between meals, hunger cues get out of sync, leading to severe hunger pangs," says clinical wellness expert Namita Jain.
A simple solution
Firstly, understand your body clock. Know the difference between actual hunger and stomach contractions. Also, at times you may be misguided by people around you. "You may feel that eating less is better but it isn't true," says John Gloster, fitness expert. "Starvation is never a great survival strategy. Eat less but eat more often," he adds.
Is it hunger or thirst?
Figure out whether you are hungry or thirsty? Sometimes your body can send off signals to the brain that you are hungry. This is because food has lots of fluid contained within it. However, you don't want to be confused with taking on-board unwanted calories when you simply haven't had enough to drink. The key is to ensure you keep your fluid intake up over the course of a day.
What to eat and when
If you're following a particular diet, you will always prefer to carry a lunch box to work. A wheat bread sandwich, idlis (four to five), unpolished rice ( a bowl) and curd, a roti roll filled with vegetables or two to three fruits are apt options for the day. For mid-night hunger pangs, foods like salad sandwich are a big no-no. You would certainly not wish to sleep with a heavy stomach that leaves you restless all night. Instead, eat a fruit and drink a glass full of water over it.
The bottomline
To make sure you don't experience hunger pangs when on a diet, use top quality meal replacement drinks like coconut water, green tea and butter milk and get your hands on whatever snacks are allowed in the diet programme like soy nuts or energy bars. Eat a healthy balanced meal that doesn't leave you feeling hungry, and this way you'll get to snack on some treats when you want to!
To avoid severe hunger pangs
- Skipping breakfast is a sin. Don't skip breakfast, or you'll be starving and cranky by mid-morning. A breakfast with complex carbs and low fat protein will help stave off snack attacks.
- Plan ahead. Make sure that you have low calorie snacks and drinks with you. Take note of what times of day you become hungry and plan your meals and snacks accordingly. If you always cave in around 4 pm, schedule a snack for 3.30 and drink a big glass of water, too.
- Your body requires a certain amount of fat. Choose healthy fats, like olive oil. Mediterranean people include a lot of olive oil in their cooking and they have famously low rates of obesity and heart disease.
- Do not take drastic steps. Cutting your calories too drastically will make your metabolism slow down and cause you to be plagued with hunger all of the time.
- Eat volumes of low-cal food. Broccoli, cauliflower and veggie salads will fill you up and help stave off hunger.
- Stay away from sugary snacks and simple carbohydrates like sticky buns, cake and donuts. If you eat them your blood sugar will soar, and then crash and you'll find yourself irritable, jittery and famished.
- Eat sufficient protein. Scientific studies show that protein leaves people feeling full longer than carbohydrates.
To keep those hunger pangs at bay, distract yourself and divert your mind from food by getting involved in a task or a hobby you enjoy doing the most.

Top 15 diabetic diet tips for Indians

Top 15 diabetic diet tips for Indians

Top 15 diabetic diet tips for Indians
Top 15 diabetic diet tips for Indians (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Diabetes control is governed by following the right diabetic diet. What to eat and what not to eat is important for diabetes control and diabetes cure or diabetes reversal.

These are the top 15 diabetes diet tips from diabetologists and nutritionists. Even if you are pre-diabetic or borderline diabetic, or diabetes is part of your family, it is important to follow a diabetic diet to prevent diabetes.

Diabetologist, Dr. Sanjiv Bhambani with Moolchand Medcity suggests, "A diabetes diet should be high on fibre, must contain milk without cream, buttermilk, fresh seasonal fruits, green vegetables, etc." But remember to consume these components in moderation.

Diabetes diet for Indians should have the ratio of 60:20:20 for carbs, fats and proteins. The doctor explains, "Per day calorie intake should be between 1,500-1,800 calories with a proportion of 60:20:20 between carbohydrates, fats and proteins, respectively." He adds that a diabetes diet should "have at least two seasonal fruits and three vegetables in a diet plan."

Though dry fruits may seem like a healthy snack, it is not a good option for diabetics, as the fructose can spike your sugar level. Go for fresh fruits rather than dry fruits for diabetes control (but there are some restrictions... we'll come to it). But you can still opt for nuts as a healthy snack.

The doctor shares his recipe for diabetes diet for Indians:

- One teaspoon of methi seeds soaked overnight in 100 ml of water is very effective in controlling diabetes.
- Drink tomato juice with salt and pepper every morning on an empty stomach.
- Intake of 6 almonds (soaked overnight) is also helpful in keeping a check on diabetes.

Rekha Sharma, President and Director of Indian Dietetic Association, shares some major diabetes diet pointers that one should follow at home or at a restaurant.

Whole grains, oats, channa atta, millets and other high fibre foods should be included in the meals. If one feels like consuming pasta or noodles, it should always be accompanied with vegetable/sprouts.

Milk is the right combination of carbohydrates and proteins and helps control blood sugar levels. Two servings of milk in a daily diet is a good option.
Diabetes Control: Diabetic Diet Tips

High fibre vegetables such as peas, beans, broccoli and spinach /leafy vegetables should be included in one's diet. Also, pulses with husk and sprouts are a healthy option and should be part of the diet.

Pulses are important in the diet as their effect on blood glucose is less than that of most other carbohydrate containing foods. Vegetables rich in fibre help lowering down the blood sugar levels and thus are healthy.

Good fats such as Omega-3 and monounsaturated fats (MUFA) should be consumed as they are good for the body. Natural sources for these are canola oil, flax seed oil, fatty fish and nuts. These are also low in cholesterol and are trans fat free.

Fruits high in fibre such as papaya, apple, orange, pear and guava should be consumed. Mangoes, bananas, and grapes contain high sugar; therefore these fruits should be consumed lesser than the others.

Small frequent meals:

A large meal gives rise to higher blood sugar in one's body, therefore it is essential to take small frequent meals to prevent both higher and very low blood sugar values and keep them constant. Small in between snacks can be dhokla, fruit, high fibre cookies, butter milk, yogurt, upma/poha with vegetables etc.

A person with diabetes should follow a diet which is low in carbohydrates, high in fibre and contains adequate amounts of proteins, vitamins and minerals; and avoid fatty foods and sweets. He/she should also take frequent small meals (5 meals pattern).

What not to do:
Artificial sweeteners can be used in cakes and sweets for diabetic people (in moderation).
Have lots of fluid.
Limit intake of alcohol.

Should you have non-veg?

In non-vegetarian diet, seafood and chicken can be taken rather than red meat as red meat contains higher amount of saturated fats. Also, patients with high cholesterol should avoid egg yolk and red meat.

The diabetes diet for Indians includes carbohydrates, proteins and fats. As always, a balanced and planned diet can build and improve personal health. A controlled diabetes diet may seem like a drag and bore, but a good cook can add life to a diet. Time to call up mom and experiment with diabetes diets!

Mobile number portability: Now, wait for four hours

Mobile number portability: Now, wait for four hours

Mobile number portability: Now, wait for four hours
Changing mobile phone companies is going to take at least four hours, twice as long as before.
NEW DELHI: Changing mobile phone companies is going to take at least four hours, twice as long as before, with the telecom department set to issue guidelines increasing the 'break time' within which the existing service provider (donor) shifts an applicant out of the network and the new (recipient) network provider adds the subscriber.

The move has ruffled feathers within the telecom department, which has only agreed to increase the 'disruption' time in the licence agreement between the government and the mobile number portability service provider because the regulator has already issued the new norms.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has repeatedly said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) doesn't have the power to amend the conditions of licence agreements, according to the Trai Act and various legal interpretations. Trai can at best make recommendations but the final decision rests with the telecom department, DoT has reiterated.

While acceding to the regulator's decision on porting time, the department has also sent it a letter asking it to respect boundaries.

"It is also intimated that role, powers and territory of the government and the regulator are very well defined, which needs to be honoured and any overstepping has to be avoided," the letter said.

Samsung to launch Galaxy S5 in Jan 2014: Report

Samsung to launch Galaxy S5 in Jan 2014: Report

Samsung to launch Galaxy S5 in Jan 2014: Report
A report says that the Galaxy S5 will be unveiled in January 2014 and will hit the shelves the following month.

NEW DELHI: South Korean manufacturer Samsung has reported less than stellar sales of Galaxy S4, the top smartphone in its portfolio. It seems that the disappointing sales of the handset have compelled the company to move up the launch of next year's flagship device, the upcoming Galaxy S5.

A report by South Korean internet giant Naver says that the Galaxy S5 will be unveiled in January 2014 and will hit the shelves the following month. This means that Galaxy S4 would spend the least amount of time at the top of the company's smartphone portfolio among all Galaxy S series phones. Both Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S III remained on the top of the chain for a year each, while Galaxy S II was the flagship smartphone for 15 months.

The report also says that the Galaxy S5 will have Samsung's 64-bit eight-core Exynos 5430 chipset. This chip will feature Heteregenous Multi-Processing (HMP) technology that allows all eight cores of the processor to work simultaneously. In the current eight-core chips that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, only four of the eight cores can operate at a time.

Samsung Galaxy S5 is also expected to have a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization and better performance in lowlight conditions. The recently unveiled Isocell sensor is also expected to debut with this smartphone.

Earlier rumours point towards a waterproof and dust-resistant body and a curved and unbreakable screen. Samsung has also filed a patent for the metal body designed for smartphones, suggesting a change in material of construction for next year's top handset.

Samsung has recently unveiled the world's first smartphone with a curved screen, named Galaxy Round.

TOKYO: Toyota on Friday unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel.

The Japanese giant autos using the self-driving technology could be available on the market in just a few years' time.

"These advanced driving support technologies prevent human errors, reduce driving stress and help drivers avert accidents, which has a big potential to reduce the number of traffic deaths," Toyota managing director Moritaka Yoshida said at a presentation in Toky

Yuvraj dedicates match-winning knock to Sachin Tendulkar
"Yuvi is back my friend," Yuvraj told the media.

RAJKOT: He should have been on cloud nine after smashing a match-winning unbeaten 77 against Australia in the one-off T20 International in his comeback match, but Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh said he had mixed feelings as it came on the day Sachin Tendulkar retired from Test cricket.

An emotional Yuvraj, who guided India to a six-wicket win over Australia here, dedicated his unbeaten innings to Tendulkar who on Thursday announced that he would quit Test cricket after playing his 200th match against the West Indies next month.

"Well I don't know if I am happy or sad. Happy that I hit the ball and sad day that Sachin is retiring. But really happy the way I hit the ball and how I continued to play well since the India A and West Indies A series," Yuvraj said at the post-match press conference.

"Definitely, I would like to dedicate it to Sachin and hopefully, maybe tell him on the phone as well. That is the least I can do, dedicate this knock to him. I will also like to dedicate this knock to my mother who prayed a lot for my comeback. Everyday she has been praying for me," he said.

The 31-year-old batsman, who last played an international match in January, was recalled to the national team after a string of fine performances for India A against West Indies A and a solid display for India Blue in the NKP Salve Challenger Series.

"Yuvi is back my friend," he told the media.

Yuvraj said it was an emotional moment for the country when an iconic cricketer like Tendulkar retires and added that he did not want to see him leave the game.

"I don't think I am going to let him go away. I am going to catch hold of his feet and not (let him) leave the dressing room. It has been amazing to play with him for so many years. One of the greatest players to have played the game. I don't know what to say," he said, adding that the team did not discuss Tendulkar's retirement in the dressing room.

"There are so many things to say about Sachin, probably the best Indian cricketer ever played. Just the milestone as not only as a cricketer but just as a man, who is an ambassador of cricket around the world. So it is going to be an emotional time for the whole of India," Yuvraj said.

"Sachin will always be very special to me. I am sure I will have the opportunity to play with him, I don't know if I will (be selected) but if I am not playing, I will definitely come and watch (his last match)," he added.

Yuvraj, who survived a germ cell cancer, said that people should respect Tendulkar's decision.

"It is upto him when he wanted to retire. A player of his stature should decide when he wants to leave. I would want him to play for 10 more years with us. It is his decision and we need to respect that. It will be an emotional time for India when he plays his last match," he said.

Describing the qualities he likes about Tendulkar, the flamboyant left-hand batsman said that it would be tough to see the champion batsman go.

"He is a very down-to-earth person. He never showed he is the great Sachin Tendulkar. He was always trying to reach out to youngsters although we were a bit reluctant to go out to him. Personally he has always guided me on and off the field about things in my life, specially the World Cup journey. So it has been very special playing with him. I can't really express it in words. It is tough for me to see him go."

He said it would be next to impossible for anybody to fill in the shoes of the 40-year-old retiring batsman.

"The way he hits the ball, the way he is always still. The best batsman I have seen in my career, technique-wise. How he has been smart all these years to know what bowlers are going to bowl to him. He always been one or two steps ahead, and that is why he been consistent for so many years. To have such consistency over so many years is really tough for any batsman. He is just something amazing. He has been a God's gift to India. It is going to be difficult for anybody to replace him as the next Tendulkar," he said.

Yuvraj rated his comeback knock as special and said, "Definitely it is special. I have come back after a few months. I have worked quite hard in the off season and I have worked on the mental aspect of my game," he said.

"Just happy the way I hit the ball. I have been playing well in the domestic season. I had a tough off season, shed a few kilos, so I am happy the way I am hitting the ball," he added.

On the unbeaten 102-run stand he had with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj said, "We have had a lot of partnerships in the past. And we have always discussed which bowlers to go after. If I get out then, one person is attacking and one person is trying to rotate the strike. We have a very good understanding between us for last couple of years. So talking to him always helps."

He said he hoped to continue his form in the seven-match ODI series starting October 13 in Pune.

"I hope to continue the good form. Play according to the situation and try to make India win again. Australia is ranked number two in ODIs. They have a very good side. It is going to be a good series so I hope to contribute with my batting, bowling and fielding. It is going to be a tough series and hopefully we can play good tough cricket, sensible cricket and win the series," he said.

Who will fill the void left by Sachin Tendulkar?

Who will fill the void left by Sachin Tendulkar?

It will be futile to find a 'replacement' for a man with 34,273 international runs, 662 international games and 100 international tons. (Getty Images)

Who after Sachin Tendulkar? This is a question that has not been asked for more than two decades. It was a rhetorical question as no one really thought it could be answered.

That question was used as a compliment to Tendulkar's genius. Through this period, the sight of Tendulkar walking out to bat in a Test after India had lost its top two batsmen has been as inevitable as birth and death.

But with the man who made the 'crotch-yank' an adorable signature, set to retire after two Tests, it's a question that someone has to try to answer.

So who are these contestants for that spot in the Indian Test team? First it is obviously important to realise that it will be futile to find a 'replacement' for a man with 34,273 international runs, 662 international games and 100 international tons. But someone will have to fill this HUGE void when India travels to South Africa in December for a Test series.

The most obvious contender in the immediate future seems to be Virat Kohli. The Delhi youngster showed both his ugly side, with his middle-finger gesture, and his bright side, with a debut Test ton at Adelaide, during India's tour Down Under in 2012.

He was batting at number 6 then and was subsequently moved to number 5 when VVS Laxman called quits just before the home series against New Zealand. He has responded with three tons since and has made a strong case for a promotion.

With a solid Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, an aggressive Kohli could be the idea foil at a batting position from where he can dictate terms to the opposition.

The opening at number four might have just come at the ideal point for someone like Rohit Sharma too.

Although the Mumbai lad these days opens for India in the ODI and T20 format, he bats at number four in the first-class matches for Mumbai. The Mumbaikar must be high on confidence after leading Mumbai Indians to the Champions League title, his batting form is good too and he has sorted out the demons in his mind. The spot can be his for a long time if he is ambitious and desperate enough.

Tendulkar's departure might also offer a lifeline for Yuvraj Singh. The left-hander has played just 40 Tests since making his debut in 2003 and hasn't fulfilled even half of his talent; but he has battled cancer now and is looking in prime shape and form to stake a claim to that spot. If the selectors are looking for experience, the Punjab-man demands a serious look in as a Test batsman.

Another veteran who actually has been eying that spot is Virender Sehwag. In the past, he has talked about his desire to bat at number 4 once Tendulkar retires. But the biggest factor against him is his current bad form. He hasn't got a Test ton since Ahmedabad in November 2012.

He hasn't even scored against West Indies A in an on-going series where he has been batting at number four. He got a 38 but it will be bit of a surprise if he gets a chance to bat at that position for India in the near future. But if he gets it, trust Sehwag to succeed.

Then there are players like Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Gujarat's Manpreet Juneja. It's an open season. But Please. Please, please... don't expect a Sachin Tendulkar.

The sight of the straight lines of the bat on its downswing; the power of the back foot punch; thanks for the memories Sachin. Glad you came - Ian Bishop , former West Indian fast bowler.

BEST TWEETS

Privileged to have seen a child prodigy go on to become a true legend of the game from very close quarters. All the best Sachin. @sanjaymanjrekar

Sachin Tendulkar shaped the idea of Team India in his own image

Sachin Tendulkar shaped the idea of Team India in his own image

Imagine. Paris without Eiffel Tower. New York without the Statue of Liberty. London without its Underground. China without the Wall. Or Agra without the Taj.

Now imagine cricket without Sachin Tendulkar.

None of them can ever be the same without the one thing that has become its defining characteristic; it's almost like peeling off the soul from the depths of a body. The little master blaster has left us all wallowing in that void by announcing his retirement from the game on Thursday.

For a player who has demolished every record possible with rare humility and grace, it is fitting that his last match should be his 200th Test; someone may catch him in the run race, or on the averages or some other front, but they will need two lifetimes of a player to come anywhere near this milestone.

When he strode into our hearts on his majestic willow, still a little boy almost 25 years ago, he carved out two distinct types of cricket followers: those who love the game for its nuances and subtleties; and those who love the game simply because of him.

Almost overnight, he turned India into a country of cricket fanatics.

Today, it may sound apocryphal, almost difficult to believe , but the nation actually used to come to a standstill when he was out there batting, battling against the odds; old men and ignorant ladies danced at every boundary, each a masterpiece in itself, unshackling India from its chains; and puritans shook their heads in disbelief at the audacity of his strokes and, at the same time, the simplicity behind its execution.

For those who wanted to emulate him, most of his shots were in the realm of fantasy: impossible to even try.

Of course, he had to wait for the emergence of Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman, Kumble and Srinath to transform India into world beaters; but much before that he had already changed the very idea of cricket, of sport itself, giving a new lifeline to millions of kids.

He was the first million-dollar cricketer, an icon who was as popular as Amitabh Bachchan himself; India had other batsmen of similar pedigree, and some with probably as much talent, but none had the courage to look into the eye of a speed demon and whack him.

At his best, Sachin was the calm in a chaos, the last hope in times of despair, the lone beacon in a sea of darkness; Indian cricket was all of that during those years, imploding at the first hint of trouble and collapsing in a heap when it ought to have embraced glory. He was the lone crusader even though there was no promise of light at the end of the tunnel.
Those were gloomy days indeed, never mind match-fixing and other sins, when the team invited mirth and ridicule on tours; Sachin cried almost every time his mates didn't even offer a fight, wondering if his dream of taking India on the path to higher glory and No. 1 would remain just that: a dream.

Slowly, however, his belief became the motto of the team; the next generation of players, led by Sehwag, didn't know fear or failure. It provided the final push that the Class of Sachin needed, and together they attacked unchartered territory. It is not a coincidence that India became number one in Tests, One-dayers and even in T20 under his watch.

If he wasn't leading the charge, the team was amassing victories as a tribute to him. Sadly, injuries forced him to sacrifice the real Sachin and present to the world a lesser mortal; Sachin 2 was equally effective, and hungry for runs and wins, but he was still a pale shadow of himself.

Many couldn't reconcile to this transformation; they argued that the legend was being eroded, that he was slipping in the pantheon of greats despite the array of numbers. What they forget is that it was nothing short of a miracle that he even managed to bat after the elbow injury in 2003; after that it was just a conflict in his mind, a daily tussle against the body.

So yes, we know what it feels to not see THE Sachin at the crease; but Paris without the Eiffel? Agra without the Taj? It's a killing thought.
