5 ways social media impacts workplace

5 ways social media impacts workplace

Social media buttonsThe increasing use of social media has blurred the lines between the information that is available inside the organisation and the information that we can dig from the external world. Besides, it has resulted in the creation of new roles…
Changes in media drive shifts in people’s behavior. People share their deepest secrets on social media. We are all getting comfortable handling much more information about each other than we have ever before. Social media has changed how much we know about our colleagues and our organisation. We all have more information than we can comprehend. We look around for people who can make sense of this. That gives rise to a new breed of curators and experts.
Abhijit Bhaduri, chief learning officer, Wipro believes that the most visible shift has been in the way we seek information and make decisions both, in and out of the workplace. What was once considered personal is now information that is freely shared. Here, he discusses how that changed the workplace?
Information overload: Information in organisations has been slow to trickle down. It would get filtered by the leadership for sensitivity and “need to know”. That culture is giving way to multiple versions of information being available. Someone who is exploring a role in an organisation can get information about the organisation, the leadership, the culture and even the interview questions. Some of this is posted by current employees and some gets crowd sourced and built over time like a giant jigsaw puzzle. The employer too, can get information about a candidate that goes well beyond what is listed on the resume. This information overload often paralyzes action which is the opposite of what we expect information to do.
Influence through expertise: Social media requires a different set of competencies. Those who can leverage the new medium wield greater influence than those who are senior or officially designated to speak about an issue. Experts who share their expertise freely on social media have a voice that is powerful. A new class of influencers has appeared in the workplace. Sometimes that also stifles the voice of dissent. People find it hard to go against the popular voice and view.
Shorter response time: The more technologically savvy a person is the more impatient the person is likely to be. Email is not fast enough. Whether it is breaking news or gossip, everything travels like lightning. Leaders are expected to respond even if they do not have the complete information. Traditionally, leaders have had the luxury of verifying information and considering the repercussions of their stance before facing questions. Today, the focus is on spontaneity and speed.
Private and public information is mixed: Colleagues, subordinates and even competitors have access to information that would have been considered personal. Knowing more about a leader gives people a chance to know the human being behind the role. Once it starts it is hard to stop the flow of information. Knowing that the doctor leads a certain lifestyle may affect our assessment of the person’s competencies.
Unforgiving: There is no delete button on the internet. People’s stance on an issue, a statement or an opinion is not left to the limitations of human memory. The internet has become a giant collective memory that can flawlessly retrieve every digital communication on the subject. That makes it hard for people to revise their views and even fix their errors. The compulsion for people to be seen as consistent is often the side effect of this unfailing memory.

India to be tough market for Google's Android One phones: IDC

India to be tough market for Google's Android One phones: IDC

India to be tough market for Google's Android One phones: IDC
Google's Android One devices will help redefine the affordable smartphone segment, but the Indian market will be a tough call, IDC believes.

NEW DELHI: Google's ambitious move to address the fragmented Android ecosystem with its Android One devices will help in redefining the affordable smartphone segment, but the Indian market will be a tough call for the US-based tech giant, research firm IDC believes.

Last month, Google launched Android One range of devices in partnership with Indian handset makers Micromax, Karbonn and Spice and mobile operators like Airtel and Reliance. The smartphones are priced Rs 6,399 onwards.

"Despite significant marketing spend already in evidence on Android One, IDC believes India will be a tough crucible for Google. Blocked out of China, Google has no choice but to make a large downstream investment in the next billion consumer segment in India," the research firm said.

India is the first country where the California-based firm's Android One devices have been launched. Rollout across other markets like Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka will follow in coming months.

Success in this segment will greatly enhance their ability to leverage Android to drive adoption by the next billion of the Google consumer cloud, it added.

"IDC believes that Android One is crucial for Google to execute on its strategy to leverage the fast-growing Android user base to drive engagement for its increasing portfolio of essential Google services, including search, Maps, Google Now and others," it said. A consistent user experience, or at least a vastly improved one, will greatly increase engagement and ultimately revenues, IDC added.

The research firm said it expects Android One will attract significant sales and redefine the affordable smartphone segment by reshaping the mid tier with a range of devices that feature good enough device specifications for a fraction of the price compared to flagship devices.

It added that Android One will go further and effectively create a bipolar pear shaped environment where the high end will be dominated by the likes of Apple and Samsung with their iPhone and Galaxy flagship devices and the low end will increasingly converge around $100 Average Selling Price (ASP) benchmark.

144,000 approach Google to be ‘forgotten’

144,000 approach Google to be ‘forgotten’

144,000 approach Google to be ‘forgotten’
Google criticized the May decision, calling it a ‘disappointing ruling for search engines and online publishers in general’.

WASHINGTON: Google in its latest Transparency report revealed that it received more than 144,000 'right to be forgotten' request since the process began on May 29 in Europe.

Those requests themselves encompass 497,507 different webpages. Among the nearly 500,000 page links requested to be taken down, the company has so far removed 170,506 (41.8%) and declined to remove 237,561 (58.2%).

The process that's kept Google busy stems from a May ruling by the European Union Court of Justice that came to be known as the 'right to be forgotten'. As part of the ruling, Europeans can ask Google and other search engines to remove links to search results if they believe that such results contain information that might affect their privacy or that is simply no longer relevant or valid for some reason, CNET reported.

Google criticized the May decision, calling it a 'disappointing ruling for search engines and online publishers in general'. But the search giant has been forced to comply, even posting online form that disgruntled users can fill to request certain search links about them be removed.

Jolla smartphone review: On an alternative path

Jolla smartphone review: On an alternative path

Jolla smartphone review: On an alternative path

Top Features

- Fresh approach to UI
- Good camera
- Android app support
Finnish startup Jolla recently introduced its Sailfish OS-powered smartphone with the same name in the Indian market, offering consumers an alternative to Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and iOS (iOS is exclusive to Apple's high-end phones though) platforms.

For those unaware, Jolla was founded by former-Nokia employees involved with the development of MeeGo OS and the ill-fated Nokia N9 phone it powered. The group of employees decided to take forward the Linux-based OS to the next level and ensure that it doesn't die a death of oblivion following Nokia's abandonment of MeeGo.

The company announced the Jolla smartphone in May 2013 and started selling it in November in select markets. It's interesting that Jolla chose India, a largely Android-dominated and less mature smartphone market, to offer its smartphone. Also, the company has priced the phone much lower than what it sells for in other markets. Is the Jolla phone a good alternative when it comes to real world use? We try to find out in our review.

Build & design
The Jolla phone takes design cues from the Nokia N9 with its almost rectangular shape, partially rounded edges and sharp corners. The phone is not particularly big, however, it is a little thick, partly because of its smart back cover. In fact, you could even mistake it for two different slim phones stacked on top of each other if you look at it from the sides.

More so because the front panel's edges are rounded at the left and ride sides while the back panel's edges are flat. It's the opposite at the top and bottom edges. The phone is essentially made from premium quality plastics and feels good to hold. Some people may have an issue with the sharp corners but we did not find them to be intimidating.

The back cover of the phone, which Jolla calls 'The other half' is NFC enabled and not only lets you customize the physical appearance of the phone but also changes the phone's theme, wallpaper and other UI elements. The first 90 customers get three such covers, free of charge.

The front of the phone is devoid of any hardware buttons though it does feature a discreet LED notifications light, while the right edge sports the Power and volume rocker key. The plastic keys offer good tactile feedback and are pretty responsive.

The 3.5mm headset jack and the micro-USB port sit at the top and the speaker outlet is placed at the bottom edge. The white back cover on the demo unit had a smooth matte finish. It sports the camera lens and the LED flash. There's very little Jolla branding on the phone.

Removing the back cover reveals micro-sim and microSD card slots and the battery compartment which houses a 2100mAh removable battery.

Overall, the phone is pretty well built, however, compared to other options, it does look boxy and a little out of place in a market that is witnessing the entry of slimmer and sleeker devices.

Display
The front of the phone is dominated by a 4.5-inch qHD(960x450p) display. For a device that costs more than Rs 15,000, we would have expected a 720p display but the panel is not really bad to look at. Text and graphics don't look very sharp but the system app icons and screens don't look pixilated. Having said that, viewing angles were not very wide.

Sunlight legibility was average and shooting pictures on a bright, sunny day is a little difficult. The default system font also doesn't suit the display.

Software

The key highlight of the phone is its Sailfish OS, an open source platform based on MeeGo that also supports Android apps. The navigation is totally gesture based, somewhat like BlackBerry 10.

You unlock the phone via a double tap gesture and navigate across three different screen panels - the lock screen displays the time, notifications and status bars, the second one is the Home screen that presents a live view of running apps and the third one is Launcher that features app shortcuts.

You exit apps by swiping from the left edge towards the right or vice versa, explore additional options and settings by swiping towards the bottom and get notifications by swiping towards the top. Swiping to the left takes you back a step in navigation.

There's also a pulley menu indicated by a glow at the top of the screen. Whenever you see the glowing bar, you can simply swipe down across the screen to see other options and select one of them. Some apps also have this menu at the bottom.

Instead of a pull-down notification tray, Jolla offers an Events view which can be initiated by simply swiping up the screen from the bottom bezel. It displays all notifications including social network feeds. The social feeds screen also lets you post to respective social networks.

Although there's a tutorial that guides you about the basics, we feel there's a learning curve attached to the OS, especially if you're used to an Android, Windows Phone or iOS device. It takes time getting used to the gestures and understanding the design language of the UI. Once you're familiar with it, you'll not have problems navigating around. However, we feel it could have been made simpler. For instance, after locating the app of your choice in the Jolla Store you'll need to pull down and find the install button via the pulley menu when this could have been a one tap process. Shouldn't the UI focus on making things more intuitive and reducing the number of steps to perform an action?

Similarly, the gesture for minimizing apps and going back one step inside native apps is very identical, leading to confusion.

The phone ships with the Jolla store and some preloaded Android apps including Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Snapdeal apps. The Android apps come with a navigation bar with a back button but also support the swipe to exit gesture. It's worth pointing out that major online services don't offer native apps for Jolla.

The phone comes with non-removable native apps for phone, messages, browser, camera, People (contacts), Gallery and settings, and removable apps for calculator, calendar, clock, email, media player, notes, documents (a viewer), and Here maps. All Android apps are also removable.

Just like BlackBerry 10, the native apps become live widgets in the running apps view offering some information, but Android apps display a static frame of the last accessed screen. Simple Android apps and games run smoothly on Jolla and it never feels there's an emulation layer. Having said that, the native apps look really beautiful and integrate the ambience of the UI in a much better manner. We tried a few third party clients for apps like Facebook and Twitter and found them to be really good looking although they lacked full functionality. There were also issues with notifications while using Android apps as they're not integrated with the system.

One of the strengths of Jolla is its integrated Messages app. It reminds you of the Windows Phone messaging app but this one also brings in support for Google Hangouts in addition to Facebook Messenger and XMPP-based services. Messages are received and send instantly and you can see all your communication threads on a single screen.

The Jolla keyboard offers a good typing experience and has a minimalist look. It offers scrollable word suggestions and option to switch the language.

Overall, the Sailfish operating system looks fresh and the gesture-based approach to navigation is interesting albeit a little cumbersome to use at times. Other than the novelty and the founders' promise of not sharing users' personal data, there aren't many reasons to choose the platform over Android and iOS.

Camera
Jolla phone features an 8MP rear camera alongside an LED flash, and a 2MP front-facing camera as well.

The Jolla camera app offers a number of granular settings but misses out on Panorama and HDR modes.

The camera takes good quality pictures in daylight with accurate colour reproduction and good amount of detail. The pictures don't look good on the phone due to the low display resolution but transfer them to a PC and you'll realize that the phone has a very capable rear camera especially for pictures taken in optimal light conditions. Even low-light photos were decent though these pictures were not as rich in terms of detail. There was very little noise.

The rear camera is capable of shooting 1080p video but video quality was average.

The front camera takes good quality selfies.

Performance

Powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, the Jolla smartphone comes with 16GB storage expandable via microSD card. 13.7GB storage is available to the end users.

We found navigating across the home screen, launching and switching between apps to be very smooth. Compared to other phones in the same price range, the hardware is modest but we have to say that it is well optimized for the Jolla OS and you don't come across stutter or lag while using native apps. Casual Android games like Cut the Rope and Subway Surfers run smoothly but we were not able to install games such as Riptide GP 2 or Asphalt 8 due to requirement of additional files not available via third-party Android app stores. You'll not be able to install Android apps that integrate a Google service or rely on Google Play for payments. Some Android apps crash frequently.

In terms of call quality and network reception the phone performs well and the other party was able to hear us loud and clear thanks to the good quality microphones.

The phone was able to play HD videos and supports most popular video formats.

The phone comes with GPS and A-GPS for navigation and maps and was easily able to lock a signal. It also comes with NFC connectivity to initiate file transfers to other NFC-enabled phones and receive data from NFC tags.

Coming to battery life, the 2100mAh battery of the phone helps in achieving a respectable backup. With the phone's brightness set to automatic and intermittent use of WiFi and 3G, the phone lasted a full day (9-10 hours) with usage comprising few hours of phone calls, casual gaming, an hour of web browsing and accessing Twitter and Facebook, in addition to clicking a few pictures.

Verdict
At a price of Rs 16,499, the Jolla phone offers an alternative ecosystem to users who maybe tired of Android, iOS or Windows Phone and are open to experiment and try a less evolved, community supported platform. Jolla phone could perhaps be a good secondary smartphone used mainly for messaging. If you're a smartphone enthusiast and have been been waiting to buy this phone, you'll find the price very attractive (the phone sells for 349 euros in Europe).

We'd not recommend the Jolla phone to users who're just switching from a feature phone as it feels like a work in progress. The Sailfish OS has a steep learning curve and doesn't offer a good number of native apps. If you have to rely on Android apps to get work done, we're not sure why you wouldn't use an Android phone that comes with the Google Play Store. You'll get access to all Android apps and better performance.

In the same price range, you can consider Micromax Canvas Knight, Asus ZenFone 6 and HTC Desire 616, if you're open to buying an Android phone. The new Nokia Lumia 730 is also a great option if you don't mind a Windows Phone option.

Jolla has good potential but in its current form it is still far from becoming a viable, mainstream smartphone platform.

Soon, gadgets that dissolve fully in water

Soon, gadgets that dissolve fully in water

Soon, gadgets that dissolve fully in water
Practical applications might include: bioresorbable devices that reduce infection at a surgical site.
WASHINGTON: A new generation of electronic devices that dissolve completely in water, leaving behind only harmless end products may soon become a reality.

Pioneering research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign may bring in devices that range from green consumer electronics to biomedical sensor systems that do their work and then disappear.

John A Rogers' research group at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory is leading the development of such concepts, along with all of the required materials, device designs and fabrication techniques for applications that lie beyond the scope of semiconductor technologies that are available today.
"Our most recent combined developments in devices that address real challenges in clinical medicine and in advanced, high volume manufacturing strategies suggest a promising future for this new class of technology," said Rogers.

Practical applications might include: bioresorbable devices that reduce infection at a surgical site. Other examples are temporary implantable systems, such as electrical brain monitors to aid rehabilitation from traumatic injuries or electrical simulators to accelerate bone growth.
Additional classes of devices can even be used for programmed drug delivery, Rogers said.
The devices would provide robust, reliable, high performance operation, but only for a finite period of time dictated, for example, by the healing process - they would not only be biologically compatible, but also biologically punctual, performing when and as the body needs them.

After their function has been fulfilled, they would disappear through resorption into the body, thereby eliminating unnecessary device load, without the need for additional surgical operations.

The research will be presented at the AVS International Symposium & Exhibition next month in Baltimore.

Govt eases hiring norms for IT companies’ units in SEZs

IT-ITeS companies that have set up a new unit in a special economic zone (SEZ) will be able to transfer existing technical employees, provided they account for not more than 50% of the total manpower engaged in software development in the new SEZ unit.
MUMBAI: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has revised upward the percentage of existing employees that can be transferred by companies in the IT & ITeS sector to a new SEZ unit, without losing the tax holiday benefits.

IT-ITeS companies that have set up a new unit in a special economic zone (SEZ) will be able to transfer existing technical employees, provided they account for not more than 50% of the total manpower engaged in software development in the new SEZ unit.

The circular clarifies that the computation of the manpower ratio for the new SEZ unit in its first year of operation will be considered as 'at the end' of the financial year. "Thus, it could be possible for a company to start business operations from its SEZ unit, by transferring a handful of existing employees and later hire new employees and meet the ratio," explains a CFO of an IT company.

An alternative option has also been provided to companies. If the company is able to show that the net addition of new technical manpower in all units of the company is at least equal to the number that represents 50% of the total technical manpower of the new SEZ, the tax holiday benefit will not be denied.

"Many companies operate both of out SEZ and non-SEZ units; thus this option is a welcome flexibility provided to the companies as it recognizes and considers the spirit of new employment generated by the company as a whole, rather than restricting it only to the new SEZ unit," says Punit Shah, co-head, tax at KPMG.

As reported by TOI, an earlier circular issued in July by the CBDT had sent shock waves in the IT sector. Subsequently, the CDBT received representations from many companies and also the industry body Nasscom, which argued that the limit of 20% for eligible manpower transfer, set down in the circular, was inadequate, restrictive and would impact global competitiveness in terms of quality and timely delivery.

SEZ units are granted a graded 15-year tax holiday. As part of eligibility conditions, under section 10AA of the Income-Tax Act, the new SEZ unit should not have been formed by splitting up or reconstruction of a business already in existence; and it should not have been formed by the transfer, to a new business, of machinery or plant previously used for any purpose in excess of 20% in value.

The ministry of commerce in November 2010 had stated that there is no bar on transfer of manpower to SEZ units and the cap on transfer of assets applied only to old plant and machinery.

In this context, Ravi Mahajan, tax partner, at EY, says: "It would have been ideal to remove the criteria of employees in the context of splitting up and reconstruction. Nevertheless, the revised circular is a positive development and will bring substantial relief to companies operating in the IT & ITeS sector.

The CBDT has also clarified that its revised circular will not apply to assessments that have already been completed.

Amazon.com Inc, the online juggernaut whose rapid expansion helped derail many a brick-and-mortar retail chain, may soon open its first physical store, at a prime site in Midtown Manhattan, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Amazon plans to open its first full-fledged store across from the Empire State Building, at 7 West 34th Street, the Journal reported. The area, which is also near Macy's flagship store, is one of the city's most heavily trafficked zones.

The site will double as a mini-warehouse to support same-day delivery, returns and order pickups within New York, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The store, which is expected to open in time for the holiday shopping season, may also display Amazon's proprietary products, such as its Kindle line of e-readers and tablets, Fire smartphones and video-streaming boxes. If the store takes off, Amazon may expand to other cities, the Journal reported.

Amazon declined to comment on the Journal's report.

A store would mark a significant move for an online retailer that has capitalized on its internet business model and the cost-savings of doing away with a vast physical network.

In recent years however, chief executive Jeff Bezos has led a number of initiatives that have mandated a physical presence in cities: Lockers that temporarily hold customer purchases, for example, and a rapid expansion of grocery and same-day delivery that has often meant maintaining some sort of local distribution center.

The company has also on occasion set up pop-up stores in malls, though those have been rare

The Bangalore-based company will now offer gift coupons to customers who were unable to buy products at advertised prices and earmark specific dates beginning tomorrow for vendors to showcase wares on the marketplace. "We are sourcing additional stock in some categories or offering refunds," said Mukesh Bansal, board member of Flipkart. It is also in talks with payment gateways to ensure that transaction failures are not repeated. These processes will soon be put to the test as the company is set to launch its second big sale on Friday. The sale will last until October 16. "We had over five times our usual sale on Monday. Bansal confirmed that Flipkart would have an additional sales event, but declined to share specifics. The largest merchant on the Flipkart marketplace, WS Retail, is expected to have minimum involvement in the new sale that will kick-off on Friday. "The deals of other merchants will have prominence," said a person who directly involved with the planning. Electronics giants like Sony and LG have made known their ire about the selling practices of e-tailers. PwC's Srivastava said despite the threats brands cannot ignore e-commerce anymore. "Brands need brick-and-mortar and ecommerce. They are trying to keep both happy," said Srivastava. Flipkart sold $100 million worth of products on Monday, while rival Snapdeal said it registered sales of over Rs 1 crore every minute on the same day.
