Telecom demands niche technology specialists

Telecom demands niche technology specialists

indian-telecomIn an exclusive interaction, Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India talks about the tech specialisations in demand in the telecom vertical
Within the telecom industry there are two kinds of IT systems. One is the customer facing IT system which forms the backbone of the entire telecom business and is leveraged to provide various voice and data services to subscribers. The other is the internal IT team which caters to the needs of the employees and the entire workforce.
The telecom industry requires two distinct IT systems to run its business which reveals that the kind of tech skills diversity required within the telecom service providers is much higher, compared to other industries.
Gap between demand and supply
Though this means there is a huge opportunity for IT professionals within the telecom vertical, the skills required are quite specific. Specialised training in these areas is not very easily available in the form of a course or certification.
“Tech specialisations required within telecom vertical are niche and hence off-the-shelf-training modules are usually not available. In general, these skills are specialised, which may be acquired through hands-on experience or related trainings conducted by OEMs/ISVs,” said Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India.
This is one of the reasons why telecom companies face a challenge when looking to hire IT professionals who are domain specialists in such niche areas. Many times, techies interested to work within the Telecom industry are not aware of the kind of IT specialisations in demand within this industry.
Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India sheds light on this and talks about the kind of skill-sets in demand in Telecom.
Key tech skills in demand within customer facing IT teams
For IT professionals who want to work in the customer facing IT systems, there is a need to work with the core telecom apps encompassed in BSS (Business Support Systems), OSS (Operations Support Systems), VAS and others. For this, the techies must have skills and experience in applications that enable business processes and operational functionality.
For example, they should have exposure of:
  • Telecom billing and CRM
  • Mobile number portability
  • Revenue assurance
  • Fraud management
  • Over the air functionality
  • Business analytics
  • Campaign management
  • Churn management
  • Customer self-care
  • Regulatory and compliance prescribed systems (legal intercept, DND, second-consent etc)
  • Decision support systems
  • Supply chain management and stock management
  • Lead management, call centre technologies
  • IT services management
Essential domain knowledge for employee facing internal IT teams
Internal IT teams focus on building a robust IT support system for everyday functioning of the business. Their primary service target is the employees.
The key areas where team members of the internal IT team of a telecom company should have exposure are:
  • ERP – financials and HR
  • Collaboration and messaging
  • Intranet and intranet portals
  • Information security
  • Data centers and IT Infrastructure
Movement of IT professionals from technical to managerial roles
While technical certification is relevant for projects, development or operations profiles; for managerial roles expertise in general management and soft skills are more relevant. Mostly IT personnel within telecom industry are engineering graduates and a sizeable percentage of them also have MBA qualification. Most of the time, this is sufficient to take up the challenge of a managerial position.

How to make your mornings work for you

How to make your mornings work for you

How to make your mornings work for you
How to make your mornings work for you

The first hour or so after you wake up is extremely important and determines how your day will eventually be. Here are some ways to kick-start your day...

A positive outlook, focus, stamina, right moves and right food are your keywords in the morning. Follow these tips to turn your morning into a power hour.
Have a glass full of energy
After a night's sleep, the body is dehydrated and you must replenish the fluids in the morning. Have a glass of lukewarm water with honey and the juice of a lemon. This age-old recipe has been tried and tested by many. Make it a point to have warm water even if you don't want to have the lemon and honey. That's because even a two per cent drop in water stores can tire you physically and mentally.

Rise and shine...

Before you go off to sleep, resolve that you will get up as soon as your alarm goes off. If you programme your brain, you will feel rested and well-slept in the morning. When you hear the alarm, do not press the snooze button — the stressed, fitful sleep after that is not worth it at all. Set the alarm for the time you know you have to get up instead of postponing your alarm for every five to 10 minutes.

Colour call

Vibrant colours have a positive effect on your energy and seeing a bright colour as soon as you open your eyes will be good for you. Have bright curtains, a coloured wall or a throw pillow or a comforter that can give you that adrenaline rush.

Welcome sunshine into your life
Sunlight makes your biological clock wake you up. Experts say that the morning sun isn't as harmful as the peak-hour sun. So, sit by a sunny window while you sip your coffee and read the papers

Zaheer likely to miss CLT20

Zaheer Khan's fitness issues have been well-documented in the past.

Zaheer Khan's plans of participating in the Champions League Twenty20 has suffered a major setback. The injury-hit veteran India fast bowler, who damaged his tendon in his bowling arm during the IPL earlier this year while playing for Mumbai Indians, said that he has just started bowling and that his recovery has been quite slow, reports ESPNcricinfo.

Zaheer is nearing 100 Tests (92 matches) and has represented India in 200 ODIs, but has come under the scanner for his repeated fitness issues. The 35-year-old, when asked about another possible comeback to the national side, said he was happy being where he is for the time being.

"I like to stay in the present. Control the controllable, it's the best you can do," Zaheer said. "I don't really think about the future and what is going to happen and I don't stress about what has already happened.

"I have to just go with how my body is responding and the important thing is for me to play again, I have to bowl at my best. First I have to satisfy myself that I am there and that I can deliver. If I am able to live up to the stress and pressures of international cricket, I'll just take a call at that time."

Zaheer's previous two assignments for India has yielded decent outings, accounting for 16 wickets on tours of South Africa and New Zealand. Although a diminishing body has taken a lot out of him, Zaheer believes he was happy with his performance.

"It is about how you are impacting the game. I was never an out and out fast bowler. I was always dependent on my skill set, how I set up a batsman and how I am making that impact in a spell. If you look at these four games, I did have spells where I got wickets in bulk. I was able to break partnerships, which is the key.

"If the opponents are having a good run, someone needs to put their hand up and break it. I was always there in that scenario and those are the checkpoints for me. I was very happy that I was able to keep up with the workload."

Reflecting his views on India's disastrous Test series of England, Zaheer said the batsmen need to get going in order for the team to win matches abroad. "I have always felt that if you score 350 runs in the first innings then you are always in the game. If you don't achieve that then you are always catching up with the game.

"The success we had overseas in the past, the key was that we put the runs on the board. Then we won that battle, and then you went and got those wickets as well."

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies
In addition it looks like Samsung will upgrade Galaxy Note 4's front-facing camera from the 2.1MP found in the Galaxy Note 3 to 3.7MP.

Word on the street some time ago was that Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could pack a walloping 20MP camera, but recently a 16MP snapper has seemed more likely.

Now SamMobile is confirming once again that that's what its sources are saying along with providing a boat load of additional Galaxy Note 4 camera details, including a greater-than-ever focus on selfies.

According to the site's "elite friends," the Note 4 will indeed sport a 16MP Sony IMX240 camera, capable of shooting ultra HD video with 3840x2160p resolution at 30 frames per second.

But unlike the version of this camera found on the Korean variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Note 4's camera will reportedly also feature Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).

Camera convenience
In addition it looks like Samsung will upgrade the Note 4's front-facing camera from the 2.1MP found in the Galaxy Note 3 to 3.7MP.

But there may be much more in store for the Note 4's camera.

For one thing it will supposedly include Side Touch, a side-mounted capacitive button for snapping photos that SamMobile says was originally intended for the Galaxy S5 before being pulled at the last minute.

Further there may be a new gesture for accessing the camera when the screen is off; tapping with two fingers and swiping them apart.
Best selfies ever
But clearly the most important rumor here is that the Galaxy Note 4 will have four new camera modes, three of which are dedicated to the art of the selfie: "Selfie" mode, "Wide Selfie," "Selfie Alarm," and "Create A GIF File."

Most intriguing of those is Selfie Alarm, which allegedly makes it easier to take selfies with the phone's superior rear-mounted camera by allowing it to automatically detect your face and snap the photo.

Hopefully we'll know more soon, as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected out in September

Apple filing reveals plans for 'jewelry' components

Apple filing reveals plans for 'jewelry' components
A PTT Research analyst posted an Apple filing in which the firm asked Department of Commerce for permission to expand its sapphire production.

In case you wanted even more evidence Apple is planning to release a new sapphire laden device... PTT Research senior analyst Matt Margolis posted an Apple filing on Scribd in which the Cupertino firm asked the US Department of Commerce for permission to expand its sapphire production operations at its new Mesa factory. Everything looks legit, down to Apple director of global trade compliance James J Patton's signature.

The alleged request was filed on July 2 and requests an expedited review so Apple could meet an "aggressive go-live timeline of August 2014." The filing goes on to make several mentions to sapphire and "jewelry" components.

Adding everything up, it seems as though Apple was looking to kickstart sapphire production by the beginning of this month. The newly reported documents tie closely to reports last week suggesting Apple was hoping to begin producing mass quantities of sapphire by the end of August at its GT Advanced Technologies co-operated factory.

Time's up
So far, we've heard many early reports pointing to the Apple introducing a sapphire screened device. Once again, there's no mention in the document what size or type of electronic we might see sapphire being incorporated in to.

Jewelry components, however, is a big hint Apple is thinking iWatch here.

Due to the lateness of the sapphire production it seems even less likely it will come to the iPhone 6. Assuming history repeats itself, Apple's next handset should show up at its usual September event and go on sale close to a week later.

It would be nearly impossible for Apple to go from producing phones, assembling them and then launching the device into a full retail launch all within the span of a month and a half. At the same time reports have suggested sapphire is being reserved for a more expensive iPhone 6.

The heavily speculated iWatch seems like a much more likely candidate to receive the sapphire screen upgrade. Luxury watches typically come with the scratch resistant material and a recent report also tipped the Apple wearable to get the sapphire treatment.

Stay tuned for September 9 when we're guaranteed to at least see the iPhone 6. We wouldn't put it past Apple to slip in the iWatch too for good measure

Microsoft to unveil Windows 9 on September 30: Report
The Verge's sources say Microsoft has begun planning a big press event at the end of September to officially unveil the next version of Windows.

Set your calendars — it seems Microsoft is all set to unveil Windows 9 on September 30.

Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have informed The Verge that the company has begun planning a big press event at the end of September to officially unveil the next version of Windows.

Codenamed Threshold, Microsoft may even have a developer preview of Windows 9 waiting in the wings for release in in late September or early October. Sources claim the event will reveal many of the key features in the upcoming operating system.

One of the most exciting tidbits of the Windows 9 preview is it could include an early desktop version of Cortana.

So far Microsoft's virtual assistant has only lived on Windows Phone 8.1 mobile devices, though some features have spilled over to Bing. It would make sense for Microsoft to implement Cortana on full-fledged PCs considering the company has announced it was moving towards a single Windows platform across devices.

Bringing back the old favourites
Early reports surrounding Windows 9 thus far have suggested Microsoft will bring back features to make its next operating system more focused for desktops. Most importantly Windows 9 could reintroduce the Start menu with a few incorporated smart tiles influenced by Windows Phone 8.1.

More recent reports have suggested the Redmond company will do away with the Charms bar and move quick access options to application title bars. Supposedly Microsoft is implementing the change in service of a more keyboard-and-mouse friendly experience for desktop users.

Microsoft has also been purportedly building a combined version of its Windows RT and Windows Phone operating systems. We imagine this hybrid platform could be used for a new line of more entertainment consumption-based tablets rather than a productivity mobile PC like the Surface Pro 3

Indian-origin top executive to exit LinkedIn
LinkedIn's Indian-origin top executive Deep Nishar is to step down from being senior vice president  but continue to act in an advisory capacity.

NEW YORK: Global professional network LinkedIn's Indian-origin top executive Deep Nishar is leaving the company after a tenure of six years, during which he "transformed" the member experience and helped increase the user base tenfold to 313 million around the world.

An Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and Harvard Business School alumnus, Nishar is senior vice president for products and user experience at LinkedIn.

In a blog post yesterday, Nishar said he will be stepping aside from his full-time role in October but would continue to act in an advisory capacity to the company and its CEO Jeff Weiner.

Nishar had joined LinkedIn in January 2009 from Google where he was senior director of products, Asia-Pacific.

"I am passionate about building and leading businesses and companies that have the potential to make a significant positive impact in the world and have had the honour and privilege of doing so at both LinkedIn and Google. I look forward to the possibilities that the future holds and the opportunity for a 'three-peat'; or, as my cricketing buddies would say, a 'hat-trick'," he said.

He said LinkedIn is in "great shape" and is on its way to "mapping the global economy to connect talent with opportunity at massive scale."

LinkedIn credited Nishar for "completely" transforming member experience during his tenure and helping it become an integral part of a professional's day.

Acknowledging Nishar for his "dedication and contributions," the company said that he had joined LinkedIn when it had over 30 million members and "during his time at the company, the member base has grown tenfold to 313 million members around the world.

60,000 users join student in suing Facebook
A law student's lawsuit challenging Facebook for privacy violations had gathered support from 60,000 users and passed its first legal review.

VIENNA: An Austrian law student said his class action challenging Facebook for alleged privacy violations had gathered support from 60,000 users and passed its first legal review.

Max Schrems, who already has a case involving the social network pending at the European Court of Justice, is claiming damages of 500 euros ($663) per user from US-listed Facebook. The $195 billion company has 1.32 billion active users.

Schrems said the Vienna Regional Court had ordered Facebook Ireland to respond within four weeks to his claims, which include that the social network aided the US National Security Agency in mining the personal data of Facebook users.

Facebook Ireland, which runs the company's international activities, was not immediately available to comment.

Schrems closed the list of plaintiffs earlier this month after 25,000 people joined the campaign, because his legal team needed to verify and administer each one.

Since then, another 35,000 have registered on www.fbclaim.com to join the class action should it expand later, Schrems said on Thursday

Asus Zenfone 4 A400CG Review: Rounding Out the Familyin

Asus Zenfone 4 A400CG Review: Rounding Out the Family

asus_zenfone_4_angle1_ndtv.jpg
Asus made quite a splash by launching three new phones this month, the Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6. Despite the naming scheme, these are not the same device with different screen sizes. The sizes correspond to significant differences in price and capabilities.
Each of the three has its niche, and the Zenfone 4 is aimed squarely at capturing the bottom end of the smartphone market. Asus has its sights on first-time Android buyers who represent a massive opportunity for smartphone vendors.
There are two versions of the Zenfone 4 - the A400CG model which we have in for review today has a 4-inch screen and a 5-megapixel camera, whereas theA450CG, which hasn't launched here yet, has a 4.5-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera. Most other specifications are the same.
We were pretty impressed by the Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6, which both provide excellent value at their price points. Now it's time to put the smallest sibling through our review process.
asus_zenfone_4_rear_ndtv.jpg
Look and feel
The Zenfone 4 is pretty small by today's standards, which means it's very easy to hold and use. It's very slightly shorter and wider than an iPhone 5, but quite a bit thicker. The bulging back in fact makes it more comfortable in the hand.
Our Zenfone 4 test unit came with a striking satiny blue rear panel, though black, white and red are also available. It's a high-quality finish, but we really wonder why Asus printed its own logo in red, right beneath the camera lens and speaker grille. There are also prominent white Intel Inside and Zenfone logos on the bottom rear.
asus_zenfone_4_left_ndtv.jpg
The front is pretty consistent with the larger two Zenfones - there are three capacitive buttons below the screen and a speaker and camera above it. The lower lip and buttons have the distinct concentric circle texture that all Asus's Zen products have, but in this case it's all plastic and much less apparent.
The power and volume buttons are on the right edge, while the Micro-USB port is on the right and headset socket is on the top. There are two SIM card slots on the left edge, beneath the removable cover. The microSD card slot is to the left of the camera lens, right above the battery cavity. Unlike its bigger siblings, the Zenfone 4 has a removable battery.
asus_zenfone_4_slots2_ndtv.jpg
Specifications and Software
With reduced prices come reduced specifications. The screen is a 4-inch 480x800-pixel panel which really isn't very bright and has poor viewing angles. The processor is a relatively low-end Intel Atom Z2520, which is a dual-core 1.2GHz model with Hyper-Threading and integrated PowerVR SGX544MP2 graphics. The 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage space are both on the higher side for phones in this price range, and will help keep things fresh and snappy for a while. You also get Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, an accelerometer and proximity sensor. The essentials are all accounted for, except maybe an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness control.
Asus ships the Zenfone 4 with Android 4.3, and there's quite a heavy skin on it called ZenUI. For the most part, we like Asus' work. The lock screen is clean and simple with all the required functionality - a big clock, weather information, notifications, alarm time, and shortcuts to the phone, messaging and camera apps. The shortcut icons also show the number of missed notifications, but strangely, you can't see who called or messaged.
asus_zenfone_4_flat_ndtv.jpg
You can have up to nine homescreens. Asus includes a widget called What's Next that shows upcoming appointments and important events. The app drawer has tabs which let you show only your downloaded or frequently used apps.
The notifications shade and quick settings panel are customised. They're both crisp and clear, which is all the more necessary on the Zenfone 4's low-resolution screen. You'll also see visual tweaks in the Settings, Messaging, Music, Email and other apps.
asus_zenfone4_screens1_ndtv.jpg
We weren't too happy with the default Asus keyboard - the layout is a bit odd with keys stacked perfectly in a grid rather than the more natural layout with each row offset - but there's no shortage of replacements in the Play store. Also, the decision to stick with capacitive buttons means you won't accidentally hit them while typing.
Asus includes a few interesting apps. SuperNote lets you create multi-page notes, on which you can type or sketch in multiple colours and styles. You can also embed photos, videos, audio clips, shape stamps and more. Do It Later is a reminders app that integrates with cloud services including Google and Exchange accounts. What's Next is the app counterpart of the homescreen widget of the same name.
asus_zenfone4_screens2_ndtv.jpg
The Splendid app lets you tweak screen parameters such as colour temperature and saturation. You can tweak each of the options by a few steps, but avoid the extremes (unless you want a monochrome screen, which is totally possible). The AudioWizard app only presents six audio EQ presets for different scenarios, including one for saving power. Share Link lets you easily set up a Wi-Fi Direct connection between two devices for file exchanges. Power Saver lets you define a custom profile or use a preset one to make the battery last longer.
Finally, there's the Kindle app, Movie Studio, Omlet Chat, Mirror, and of course assorted Google apps. Since most of the choices are actually quite useful, it doesn't feel like the Zenfone 4 comes with too much bloat.
asus_zenfone_4_buttons_ndtv.jpg
Camera
Asus has packed quite a few filters and effects into its camera app. There are twelve modes to play with, including Time Rewind, Night, Selfie, Miniature, Smart Remove, All Smiles and GIF Animation. A Time Lapse mode is available when recording video. These work to varying degrees, but it takes quite a while to process some effects such as fake depth of field. There are also assorted filters which are applied before taking shots - Pencil, Cartoon, Lomo, Sepia, and more.
Party Link is a feature that uses Wi-Fi to sync photos between Asus phones as soon as they're taken. One person creates a group, and then others in the vicinity can join it. Other options you can adjust include image size, burst, anti-shake, face detection, auto focus mode, face detection, ISO, white balance and EV. It's a pretty broad range of capabilities for such an inexpensive device.
asus_zenfone_4_camsample_day_ndtv.jpg
Images measure only 2560x1440 (16:9) by default, but you can choose the larger 2560x1920 (4:3) if you prefer. Despite the low resolution, our test photos came out surprisingly sharp and clear. Other phones in this price range have fixed-focus lenses, but the Zenfone 4 has full autofocus and you can tap anywhere on the screen to change focus and metering. Close-up shots are far better than landscapes, but even so, the amount of detail in shots is remarkable. Even in low light, quality isn't bad at all - there's no flash, but we've seen far worse photos from phones which are twice as expensive or more. Even the front camera does an admirable job - another area in which budget phones typically don't do well at all.
asus_zenfone_4_camsample_indoors_ndtv.jpg
Video was also much better than we had expected. Full HD 1920x1080 clips look surprisingly good. They're definitely not crystal clear, but detail in things such as rustling leaves and curtains flapping in the wind is very good. These are videos that can be shown off and shared anywhere.
asus_zenfone_4_camera_ndtv.jpg
Performance
The Zenfone 4 might be cheap, but it's no slouch when it comes to performance. It managed to edge out the more expensive Motorola Moto E and Sony Xperia E1 Dual in pretty much every test. The score of 15,096 in AnTuTu was significantly better than the 12,546 and 13,200 points achieved by the Moto E and Xperia E1 respectively. Similarly, the Quadrant scores for all three phones were 6,395, 5,234 and 5,109 respectively.
Graphics scores were also higher - we recorded 16.4fps in GFXbench as opposed to 10.7 and 12.8 for the Moto E and Xperia E1 respectively. The three phones traded blows evenly in the more CPU-intensive SunSpider and Mozilla Kraken tests, though.
As far as subjective usage goes, we did find ourselves waiting for apps to load, but at least ZenUI transitions are quick and fluid. Basic games such as Temple Run were good enough - we wouldn't try anything heavier than that.
asus_zenfone_4_slot_ndtv.jpg
Battery life was also good, at 5 hours, 14 minutes in our video loop test. We would have liked to see a better score here, but it's at par with the competition. This should just about get you through a full day of calls, messages and a little bit of 3G Web usage. We had no complaints about call quality either, but were surprised to see an integrated option to record calls right in the phone app.
The built-in speaker is decently loud. Sound is thin, but it can get pretty loud and at least it doesn't distort. It came as a pleasant surprise that even our heaviest 1080p video sample played flawlessly on the Zenfone 4. However, as stated earlier, the phone's screen itself is pretty awful. We had to push the brightness up to its highest setting and even then, it wasn't always easy to see what was going on. Viewing angles are terrible and reflections on the glass make things that much worse.
asus_zenfone_4_box_ndtv.jpg
Verdict
It seems that Asus is really on to something here - the Zenfone 4 is a fantastically capable device, considering its price. A lot of that has to do with the choice of an Intel processor - could the company finally be about to crack the mobile market, after struggling to do so for years?
The Zenfone 4's screen is pretty bad but nearly everything else is outstanding. We're particularly impressed with the device's camera capabilities. Full HD video recording is pretty neat, and it's nice to have a front camera - more so one that isn't terrible! We're looking forward to the A450CG revision which has a totally different screen and have high hopes that Asus will improve on this phone's one weakness.
It isn't hard at all to recommend the Zenfone 4. You can weigh your options between this phone, the Moto E and the Sony Xperia E1, but we think a lot of people who are shopping in this price range would be more than happy to save around Rs. 1,000-1,500.
