10 romantic places to see before you die

10 romantic places to see before you die

There is a romantic in all of us. No matter how much we deny we'd still give anything to be in a place breathtakingly beautiful, and even better if we have someone special to share it with.

Of world's most romantic places Paris tops the chart as the city of eternal romance where even sipping champagne at a roadside cafe facing theEiffel Tower holds a special meaning. While places like Paris, Venice, the French Riviera are synonymous with ever-lasting romance, we scoured a few other destinations that spell romance, albeit in an unconventional way. Avignon, for instance, and its picturesque purple fields of lavender, the rolling tea estates of Munnar in Kerala, the lonely jungle walks in Portugal's Madeira Island might appeal to your romantic side.

Valentine's Day or otherwise, the below 10 experiences are an absolute must-do before you die.

An evening in Paris
Paris is magical, and a dream-come-true for diehard romantics. An illuminated Eiffel Tower, the life-giving waters of the Seine, the masterpieces at Louvre, the intricate detailing on every structure lining the boulevards, the saucy Moulin Rouge shows, and an atmospheric dinner at the recently refurbished '58 Tour Eiffel' restaurant on the Eiffel Tower, come together in a dizzying array to give you a different perspective on life, love and eternity.

Avignon, where time stands still...
See Europe's biggest gothic structure, the Pope's Palace in Avignon in Southern France among other architectural gems set against the coastal beauty of the Rhone River. The Monastery of the Val de Benediction with its superior frescoes is of particular importance. Stroll down the cobbled streets of Saint Remy, the village which inspired Van Gogh's masterpiece 'Starry Night'. Walk about in vineyards and savour the finest French wines. Explore the gorgeous lavender fields of Avignon; it opens up a painter's canvas of rolling green valleys, sleepy homesteads interspersed by immense blue lavender fields.

The tranquil Cote d' Azur or 'French Riviera'
The charming port of St. Tropez sees chic Parisians and other international jet set spend a laidback vacation in their private yachts. Stunning coastal scenery mingles with a palpable sense of power, wealth and glamour in Nice, the capital of the French Riviera. It's a quaint world there, only its material offerings are exclusive, rich and one-off. From shopping in chic boutiques, museum-hopping, enjoying the quiet beaches, strolling around the Roman ruins, to eating out at quaint roadside cafes, the French Riviera is an ideal retreat for a much-in-love pair.

An artist's haven and a fashionista's hub, Milan
Home to Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper', and the world's top designer labels, Milan is beguiling and addictive. Do the town on coach or foot, and experience the grandeur of the massive marble Duomo, where every opera singer aspires to perform someday. Look up the oddball art pieces and furniture range at Castello Sforzesco. A walk in the evening while browsing the boutiques of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele arcade and the Corso Venezia is an ideal way to spend time in the Italian fashion capital with your beloved.

Venice, the city of canals on a gondola
Bards, painters and filmmakers for generations have glorified this tranquil Italian canal city in their works. A gondola ride on the Grand Canal through ancient bridges past pretty baroque houses of Venice is a feeling you will always hold close to your heart. It is a fine opportunity to soak up the Venetian way of life, the one thousand year old markets around Ponte di Rialto, and experience an architectural richness that makes up Italy's most romantic city.

Lake Como and the Italian Lake District
Affording dramatic mountain scenery, Lake Como is the serenest of the three Italian lakes. In fact, Europeans love coming here because the city of Como is also the silk capital of Italy, what with silk factory outlets and branded stores strewn across its every nook and cranny. It's a great idea to buy a pretty silk scarf or a printed silk dress for your partner on a trip down its narrow, scenic lanes. From Bellagio, an old-world town in the vicinity, you can take in panoramic views of the Alps and the aqua blue waters of Lake Como. Bellagio is characterised by old villas and luxuriant gardens.

The misty tea estates of Munnar
Not just is it the highest peak of the Western Ghats, the undulating, mist-covered tea estates, and gushing waterfalls, add to the other-worldly beauty of Munnar. Drive through dark, winding roads that look like an enchanted ribbon, and discover around every bend a starkly different view. The clouds hang so low that can reach out and touch them. Lush meadows sprayed with wild flowers, the quiet sound of the gurgling brooks through narrow rocks, the green lake at Echo Point, and the warm and hospitable local folks, make Munnar hauntingly romantic.

Witness a breaking dawn in Udaipur
Lovingly called 'city of lakes' and 'city of dawn', Udaipur's romantic appeal lies in the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola and the white marble Lake Palace at its heart. The city virtually came up on the banks of Lake Pichola after Maharana Udai Singh II discovered it following a prophesy by an ascetic who summoned him to rebuild his empire over Lake Pichola after his defeat in Chittorgarh at the hands of Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Set against the looming Aravalis, Udaipur's string of lakes, the sandstone City Palace on the eastern crest of Lake Pichola, the architectural structures dotting the city, the handicraft bazaars, local cuisine, and an idle pace of life are sure to bring you back for more.

Far away in the floating gardens of Madeira Island
Tossed on the sapphire blue waters of the Atlantic, just off the mainland of Portugal, the Madeira Island resembles a gigantic floating garden. Its capital city Funchal receives honeymooners from Europe who find glory in its fine wines, mild climate, bird songs, drunk-red rhododendron blossoms, forests of pine, terraced fields, secret gorges, and the glimmering blue Atlantic visible from every clearing in the jungle. Explore on foot a tired countryside sprawled on the crater of an extinct volcano which still resorts to wicker craft for a living. Follow a levada - an irrigational canal that winds through the jungles - and discover sights of immense natural beauty.

A pint of Guinness in Dublin
Head straight to the 250-year-old brewery, the Guinness Storehouse in Ireland's capital city and find out all there is to know about the world's most celebrated beer. From ground floor to the sky bar 'Gravity' on the seventh floor, the storehouse is an experience unlike any other. From taking you through the fine process of beer making to giving you a taste of their best brews, you can literally spend an entire day among great many varieties of beer. Take your date to Gravity in the evening and enjoy a few mugs of frosty beer with appetisers while looking over a brilliantly litDublin city. The haunting romanticism of the Irish Kilkenny and Malahide castles too are worth experiencing. Do it on a day trip from Dublin

Why US President Barack Obama can't use an iPhone
The troubled mobile phone maker BlackBerry still has at least one very loyal customer: US President Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON: The troubled mobile phone maker BlackBerry still has at least one very loyal customer: US President Barack Obama

At a meeting with youth to promote his landmark healthcare law, Obama said he is not allowed to have Apple's smartphone, the iPhone, for "security reasons," though he still uses Apple's tablet computer, the iPad.

Apple was one of several tech companies that may have allowed the National Security Agency(NSA) direct access to servers containing customer data, according to revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The companies deny the allegation.

Obama fought to keep his BlackBerry after coming to the White House in 2009, though he said only 10 people have his personal email address. Neither George W. Bush nor Bill Clinton used email during their presidencies.

BlackBerry, a Canadian company formerly known as Research In Motion, virtually invented the idea of on-the-go email, but lost its market stranglehold as rivals brought out more consumer-friendly devices, like Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Androidsoftware.

The company recently halted plans to be sold and is trying to chart a new course by focusing on large business and government clients

5 most important factors all employers want to see in a good candidate

5 most important factors all employers want to see in a good candidate

Description: 5 most important factors all employers want to see in a good candidate
Harish Parameswaran, HR director, UST Global, Thiruvananthapuram, shares five ways by which a job-seeker can effectively showcase their employability skills to a prospective employer.

More than skills and educational qualifications, employability is posing a bigger challenge to India Inc, today. During recent TimesJobs Conversations, (a series of industry-academia boardroom discussions) lack of employability quotient in the workforce has been pointed out as one of the key intimidating factors while hiring.
In the current competitive and dynamic business environment, job-seekers can get their dream job or be dismissed, basis the employability skills. While, you may have it in you, it’s high time to showcase that talent of yours, advices industry experts. Harish Parameswaran, HR director, UST Global, Thiruvananthapuram, shares the following five ways by which a job-seeker can effectively showcase their employability skills to a prospective employer:
Awareness and business acumen: The ability to ‘scan the environment’ and keeping yourself updated on trending topics is pertinent.  It is definitely important to know how a business or industry works, and what makes a company tick. Showing that you have an understanding of what the organisation wants to achieve at the organisational level, and how it competes in its marketplace, is always a good start.
Communication: Communication skills include verbal/written communication and listening. Being clear, concise,  focused and being able to tailor the message for the recruiters would make the exchange of thoughts much easier.
Teamwork and problem solving: Employers always look to hire a team player who has the ability to manage and delegate work to others and also take on responsibility. It’s about building positive working relationships that can help everyone to achieve positive goals and business objectives. Additionally, if you display an ability to take a logical and analytical approach to solving problems and resolving issues, nothing like that!
Leadership: You may not be a team lead straight away, but graduates need to show potential to motivate teams and other colleagues that may work for them. It’s about assigning and delegating tasks well, setting deadlines and leading by good example. There are numerous ways through which recruiters assess these skills, including the ability to set priorities, solve problems and build relations. All these are best assessed during group discussions and through various psychometric and behavioural tests.
Confidence: A good amount of confidence, yet making sure that you do not cross the line and move onto being arrogant, helps in effectively working with clients and colleagues. Confidence can be shown through the way one responds to the interview questions, directly and precisely without being arrogant. Having the right body language also speak volumes about the level of confidence one possesses.

In general, it is also a good practice to retrospect one self, and put oneself in the employer’s shoes and ask ‘If I were the employer, would I employ me?’

LG throws open its door-in-door fridge lineup

LG throws open its door-in-door fridge lineup

LG must have had a lot of success with its current door-in-door refrigerator models, because the company just introduced three more to the lineup. If you don't already know, LG offers the door-in-door design on select French door models, and it's basically a special storage space contained within the right refrigerator door. This compartment is magnetically sealed and allows you to access that area with the push of a button without having to open the whole fridge. This easy-access design is ideal for your very favorite fridge items. And the good news is that all three of these new models will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

LG LFX32945ST

Price:$3,699.99
Total capacity: 32 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 21.5 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 10.5 cubic feet
Door type: French 3-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x37.125 inches
That $3,699.99 may seem like a hefty price for a fridge, but a 32-cubic-foot capacity is kind of unheard of in the French door world. Need to feed a (very) large family? LG's LFX32945ST might be your solution.

LG LMX30995ST

Price: $3,699.99
Total capacity: 30.3 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 20.5 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 9.8 cubic feet
Door Type: French 4-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x36.25 inches
Here's another $3,699.99 model with a slightly smaller internal capacity of 30.3 cubic feet. This model stands out because it offers four doors rather than three. That's two different freezer drawers for optimal organizing.

LG LFX29945ST

Price:$3,199.99
Total capacity:29.2 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 19.4 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 9.6 cubic feet
Door type: French 3-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x35.25 inches
This $3,199.99 model may be a little shorter on storage space at 29.2 cubic feet. But what it doesn't have in capacity, it makes up for in ice makers. Yep, it comes with dual ice makers. So if you regularly entertain a whole bunch of people, you probably won't run out of ice with the LFX29945ST.

Shutdown takes its toll on White House operations

Shutdown takes its toll on White House operations

Shutdown takes its toll on White House operations
The partial government shutdown has taken its toll on the White House.
WASHINGTON: The partial government shutdown is taking its toll on the White House, where about 3 out of 4 staffers are being kept off-duty.

Aides on furlough are barred even from checking the Blackberries they usually clutch like worry beads.

Of the 1,701 advisers, assistants, number-crunchers, butlers, chefs and landscapers at the White House normally, fewer than 450 are working. That's because the rest fall under the unfortunate category of "non-essential.''

Obama's aides have strived to maintain a sense of normalcy. But the logistical gymnastics of running the federal government's nerve center with a skeletal staff has created a sense of mild disarray.

Even the White House switchboard has been set to roll over to a prerecorded message. The message says to call back when the government reopens.

Indian man wearing dhoti stopped from travelling in Dubai Metro

Indian man wearing dhoti stopped from travelling in Dubai Metro

Indian man wearing dhoti stopped from travelling in Dubai Metro
Madhumati said that she tried her best to explain to the policeman that the dhoti was an Indian traditional dress, which covers the body fully but to no avail.

DUBAI: A 67-year-old Indian visitor was stopped from entering the Dubai Metro, apparently for wearing a traditional Indian dress - dhoti.

According to the victim's daughter Madhumati, a policeman stopped them near the punching gates of the Etisalat Metro Station on last Saturday and told her father that this dress was not allowed and he could not go on the metro wearing it.

"I pleaded with him to let us go... But the policeman wouldn't hear a word. It was really embarrassing and my father was really upset," she was quoted as saying by the Gulf News.

Madhumati said that she tried her best to explain to the policeman that the dhoti was an Indian traditional dress, which covers the body fully but to no avail.

She said her father, who is on a visit to Dubai, had travelled on the Metro wearing the same dress on various occasions but had never been stopped.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), it has no official dress code or policy.

"What has happened is really surprising. There is no official restriction from the RTA and we have not given instructions on dress codes," saidRamadan Abdullah, director of operations at the RTA's rail agency.

"I think anything that covers the body and is respectable should be allowed. I believe it was a personal reaction on the part of the policeman and this matter will be investigated."

Abdullah urged the victim to approach the RTA with details of the incident which would help in the investigation.

Madhumati has lodged a formal complaint in the matter

Six ways to share your exact location with family (and why)

Six ways to share your exact location with family (and why)

Glympse is one app of many that help you find people quickly and easily.
(Credit: Glympse)
Families outfitted with a fleet of smartphones have a lot of options for checking in that don't require exercising those texting thumbs or distracting a driver with a call just to find out exactly when he or she is coming home for dinner.
I've gathered a handful of Android applications designed to help smartphone users keep an eye on each others' whereabouts. Indeed, the first thing that comes to mind in this NSA age is whether or not this stuff is private. Rest assured, dear reader, I've got your interests at heart.
These are apps are opt-in and come with very clear instructions, as well as the best of intentions.
What you will find below are a few of my favorite apps to keep an eye on where your friends and family members might be. Most of what you'll encounter are cross-platform, meaning they work on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and even the Web.
As you read through each selection, bear in mind that this is not an exact science and that GPS signals determine how precisely locations can be calculated. What's more, none of these will work if the smartphone is turned off.

Glympse

Share your location in limited amounts with specific users or Facebook friends with Glympse.
(Credit: Glympse)
Glympse is a very simple idea that allows users to share their exact location with others in very defined, short time frames. Headed home from work and want to let your spouse know where you are? Scheduled to meet up with friends and want to see where everyone else is? This free app gives users the ability to share real-time locations, estimated arrival times, and travel speeds through e-mail, text, or social networks. Indeed, you can install and immediately share without signing up or creating profiles. Other Glympse users can track on a map within the app, and those following along on Facebook can make sure you got home safely.
One of the best features is that sharing automatically expires after a set time, ensuring your creeper friends aren't stalking your every move. Users can not only define exactly how long their location is visible, but also who sees it.
Also available for: iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry

Life360 Family Locator

Life360 provides parents with peace of mind through check-ins and messaging.
(Credit: Life360)
This free app lets parent track children and other family members in real time. Features such as the check-in (two user-defined places) and messaging client provide peace of mind, especially in the event of an emergency. Need to know if little Sally is home from school and where she might be? Family Locator provides automatic alerts so that you know the moment she's in the house. Additional noteworthy details include a full location history as well as a built-in panic feature. Should you or one of your family members find yourself in an emergency, this feature automatically sends a phone call, e-mail, or text message that includes your GPS coordinates to everyone in your connected Life360 family.
While the app and service are free to use, a premium client is available for $5 per month (which covers the whole family) or $50 per year. For your money, you receive unlimited check-in places, roadside assistance, the ability to look up non-smartphones, and stolen phone protection. If interested, you can test out Life360's premium features free for 30 days.
Also available for: iOS, BlackBerry, non-smartphones

Cozi Family Locator

Cozi lets users broadcast messages to one another, regardless of mobile platform.
(Credit: Cozi)
Simple, clean, and intuitive, Cozi Family Locator is a great way for families to keep tabs on each other. The minimal design puts three key buttons (Check-in, Emergency, and Message) in front of the user at all time. This is handy if only because of the simplicity it offers in the event of a sticky situation.
The map can be used to identify nearby safety points such as hospitals and police stations, which are especially helpful for the younger family member. Additionally, the message feature provides a central place for communication and works well across a number of platforms.
Cozi provides a number of additional mobile and Web applications; each plays well with the others. For those of you who like to plan and organize your family, budgets, travel, meals, and calendar, Cozi offers something on all fronts. Cozi Family Locator is free to use; however a premium version $4.99 a month (for up to five family members) includes access to non-smartphone users and those on other platforms.
Also available for: iOS

Find My Friends

Find My Friends provides two check-in locations, messaging, and more.
(Credit: Find My Friends)
As a branded take on the Life360 experience, Find My Friends provides users with a central place for communication and location sharing. Headed out of town for a few days of downtime? Plan and coordinate your trip with other users before getting in the car. Likewise, the app can be used to broadcast your location should you end up in a seedy part of town. Like other apps of its kind, this one uses Google Maps at its heart so it's a breeze to learn and understand. Along these lines, the map automatically lists places such as police stations, fire departments, hospitals, and other helpful places. Simply tap an icon and you'll be handed off to your preferred navigation app or phone dialer.
Much like Life360, the free Find My Friends experience might be enough for most users; however, its premium features open the door to additional options. Indeed, the $5 per month will add unlimited check-in locations, an expanded location history, roadside assistance, and support for non-smartphones. All users are invited to try the 30-day free trial.
Also available fo: iOS, BlackBerry, non-smartphones

Google+

Google+ lets users share their location with specific friends or circles.
(Credit: Google (Screenshot by Scott Webster))
One of the lesser advertised features in Google's social networking service, Google+, is the ability to share location with other users. The design is reminiscent of Google Latitude, the other location offering that is now embedded within the Maps application. To share your location with others, you simply send a request to that user through the Google+ app. Once the two of you mutually agree, you'll be able to see each other through the app. The same goes through Google Maps under the "Latitude" tab.
It is also possible to share your locations via check-in with Google+ circles. To do so, simply open up Google Maps and navigate to the Check-in tab, then choose the appropriate business or establishment. Upon selecting the proper place you'll be prompted as to with whom you would like to share the check-in. This is handy for those Friday night scenarios where you want to let your circle of local friends know where you're enjoying a cup of coffee.
Also available for: iOS, Internet

Carrier-branded apps
Each of the four major U.S. wireless providers also offers its own particular Android app or service for keeping an eye on loved ones. All four feature a number of free services and individual options tailored to the user; paid features come at a monthly premium. If you're a subscriber to one of these carriers, then you may find one of these apps suits your needs.
The carrier apps:

  • Verizon Family Locator ($9.99/month per account for up to 10 phones): Features locations, address, a detailed map, turn-by-turn directions, arrival and departure updates, integrated text messaging.
  • AT&T FamilyMap ($9.99/month to locate up to two family members, $14.99 per month to locate up to five family members): Features ability to locate from smartphone or PC, find lost or stolen phones, maps with designated safe spots, schedules, notification options. Includes 30-day free trial.
  • Sprint Family Locator ($5/month to locate up to four phones): Features ability to locate lost or stolen phones, automatic check-ins, text alerts, option to check from Web site, real-time locations. Includes 15-day free trial.
  • T-Mobile FamilyWhere ($9.99/month to locate up to 10 phones): Features automatic location checks, real-locations, text alerts, ability to work with non-smartphones, schedules. Includes 30-day free trial.

Couple on date
Just the kind of drink you choose or the amount of cleavage you show can make a huge difference

1. Sunny smile: The way you smile can say a lot about the person you are. Make sure that if you are meeting a guy for the first time you are don't come across as someone who's eager to please him and therefore is laughing at all his jokes a tad too enthusiastically. At the same time don't appear too stern by keep a serious face.

2. Dress it up: What you wear is obviously one of the first things that a guy is likely to judge you on. Whether you are a tom boy or a girly girl... all is revealed by the way you dress and most guys will decide whether to make a move or back off just by looking at the way you dress.

3. Your drink: The best way to figure you out is by your drink. Your drink can demystify you within no time. Like if you are a woman between 21-24 having rum and coke, you may be thought to be someone who doesn't have an adventurous life.

4. Can you talk? Don't try to fake interests where you have none. So if the guy is talking about football and you have no clue about it, don't pretend to be an avid fan. Just tell him outright that this isn't your field of expertise.

5. Hair scare: Are Plain Janes associated with a bun? The kind of hairstyle you sport is definitely going to leave an impression. An out of the bed look is fine, but if your hair is downright messy then it can be a major turn off.

6. Watch your cleavage: Yes, if he is a man he is bound to check out your cleavage. So, be aware of what you are projecting yourself to be. A buttoned-up shirt is likely to give you a conservative look, while showing off too much may make you seem like an easy girl. So know what you are showing.

7. What's in your bag? If your bag resembles a haversack it's not going to be very appealing, you may not be high maintenance, but if you keep bringing out stuff it may give a guy an impression that you are a hoarder or high maintenance.

8. Glam it up or tone it down: You don't need to look like an made up doll if you are at a coffee shop, similarly don't look like you have had no time to even wash your face if you are at a party. Neither is appealing, and a guy is bound to notice.

9. Clean it up: We are talking about your skin here. Guys don't notice things like a blemish on your face. But a fake tan or just an unwashed face can be a turn off. It's okay to not put on any make up, but ensure that you look clean.

10. Hold yourself: The way you sit or stand or move tell a lot about you. Fidgeting too much in your seat is a clear indication of your nervousness, while sitting far too straight may make you seem a bit stressed. Relax, be calm and just be yourself.

Psy's 'Gentleman' tops YouTube charts with 38M views in one day

Psy's 'Gentleman' tops YouTube charts with 38M views in one day

The question is now: will "Gentleman" beat out "Gangnam Style" for overall views?
Views of Psy's "Gentleman" vs. "Gangnam Style" videos over their first 50 days on YouTube.
With the same searing beat, ridiculous lyrics, and tongue-in-cheek antics, South Korea's Internet phenomenon Psy is breaking charts again with his new single "Gentleman."
YouTube announced Monday that "Gentleman" is giving "Gangnam Style" a run for its money by setting the record for getting the most views in one day ever. On April 14, "Gentleman" hit more than 38 million views. And, after only being up for about a week, the video has a total of nearly 204 million views.
"From a stats perspective, it's one of the biggest music video launches the web has ever seen," YouTube Trends manager Kevin Allocca wrote in a blog post Monday. "For some added perspective, 'Gentleman' was seen 100 million times in less than 4 days in regions all over the world, a milestone that it took 'Gangnam Style' nearly two months to achieve."

"Gangnam Style" broke YouTube records by becoming the most viewed video of all-time, it now has a staggering 1.5 billion views. It was also the first video to ever even hit 1 billion views. But, now, it's looking like "Gentleman" is making gains on "Gangnam Style." According to YouTube, Psy's new hit debuted at No. 1 on YouTube's music chart last week -- bumping "Gangnam Style" down to No. 2.
The previous single-day record was set by KONY 2012 last March with 31 million views in one day, according to YouTube. This video has a far different subject matter than Psy's dance beats; KONY 2012 tells the controversial tale of filmmaker Jason Russell's personal mission to take down Joseph Kony, the Ugandan leader of the guerrilla group Lord's Resistance Army.
